I'm planning a trip ZRH-SVO-PEK-ULN-... arriving Tuesday morning and leaving the following Monday morning, so just about the 144 hour limit. I think this works. I guess the only risk is the flight to ULN gets delayed but there are others that same day. Would love to avoid the cost and hassle of getting a China visa if I can, just nervous it feels a bit like cheating!

The scheduled departure flight is important not any delay.That's not your fault if the flight is delayed.And if you have to stay longer due to a delayed flight you have to contact the PSB office to extend your permit.

Also keep in mind that the duration of stay starts from the day after entry so a few hours' delay is fine as long as your flight departs on Monday before 11:59 PM.
