About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Ho Chi Minh to Guangzhou to Wuhan to San Francisco

I’ll be returning to San Francisco from Ho Chi Minh on April 6th via China Southern Airline.

Sat, Apr 6
China Southern Airlines 6090
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to Guangzhou (CAN) Terminal: 2

5h 25m stop Guangzhou (CAN)

China Southern Airlines 659
Guangzhou (CAN) Terminal: 2 Wuhan (WUH)

1h 20m stop Wuhan (WUH)

China Southern Airlines 659
Wuhan (WUH) to San Francisco (SFO)

According to China Southern Airline website, flight 659 can not qualify for the 72 hour free transit policy for reasons I failed to comprehend. Are they correct? I hold an USA passport. Is it too late to apply for Visa?

Thank you.

They are correct, it does not qualify for 72 hours free transit because there are two stops in China. But you will qualify for 24 hours visa-free transit, and you don't need a visa.
