Visiting shanghai for 3 days

Hello, I’m wanting to visit Shanghai for 3 days, would it be possible to take advantage of the 144 hour twov available at pudong?
I’m slightly confused with the visa eligibility, as it requires the ticket holder to have an onward journey and not a return back to origin... could you please clarify?
