About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Auckland-Shanghai

Hi, I’m looking to go from Auckland to Hong-Kong then Shanghai and then back via a similar route, Shanghai - Hong Kong - Auckland.

Does this qualify for the 72hr free transit?

Or do I still need to leave Shanghai to a different country?

If I do, does the fact that my full trip still ends up in Auckland matter?

Only the stops immediately before and after mainland China are relevant. You are flying Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong which means you are not in transit in Shanghai and therefore you need a visa.
