About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Parents coming from UK to Hong Kong. Want to take them to Guangzhou via bullet train

For the Guangzhou leg, they would be leaving from Hong Kong and returning to Hong Kong, before flying back to the UK. Is this not OK? In addition, I am assuming from the above that you cannot get a 3-day transit visa from the bullet train station?

You need a Chinese visa for that. Transit without visa doesn't apply to you (you're not in transit for one thing, and the railway station is not an eligible port of entry/exit for another).

Thanks Rob. Curses! Assuming ferry same thing? Was considering going from Hong Kong to Guangzhou then go to Macau, that would technically be in transit right? In this case would one still need a visa?

If your family will have to go to Guangzhou then there's no difference. However, if you go to Shenzhen instead, you can get a visa on arrival at one of the eligible land border crossings or port of Shekou. It's about a third of the price of a full visa but it won't authorize stays outside Shenzhen and is only valid for 5 days.
