About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Do we need visa for 23 hrs layover in Shanghai?

We have American Passport, traveling with my 1 year old baby and husband. Arriving in June 8 at 6pm, leaving next day at 5 pm. Are lines too long to exit/enter the airport?

As long as you are in transit to a third country then you don't need a visa. It would be crazy for you to try to stay in the airport that long. Make a hotel reservation and show that when you apply to leave the airport. Even in a long line, it cant be more than 1-2 hours if that.
