Have you heard of Group eVisa? It is significanlty less money

From iVisa Website. "Group eVisa is only issued to tourist groups with 2 or more members who must travel together in China. It is issued for single entry only and it is valid for 15 days after arrival. The China Group eVisa is issued on a separate sheet instead of visa sticker on the individual passport."

That's not an e-visa but the old group visa (they just no longer stamp the visas on passports since the visas are not issued by embassies but by municipal immigration offices). Not sure whether it's going to be cheaper since the US-Chinese agreement stipulated US citizens to be charged $140 regardless of visa category. Plus, US citizens can get 10-year visas now.
