You need a visa. Two stops in China limits you to 24 hours transit without visa. Longer than 24 hours means you can transit in Shanghai, or Beijing, but not both.

Thanks Rob,

So if I understand I'm only allowed to stay 24 hours in each city and not to exceed it ?

You cannot travel from Beijing to Shanghai on a transit without visa. Beijing or Shanghai but not both, otherwise 24 hour limit total in Mainland china

No. 24 hours total in China, not 24 hours in each city.
