About:China Visa

Flying to Shanghai from USA, then returning direct to USA in less than 72 hours.

Some people do "mileage runs" to earn miles on their airline frequent flier program. Sometimes they fly into an airport from the USA, then immediately fly back to the USA. Often they do not leave the airport. I want to do that with PVG (Shanghai). Can I fly there, then wait in the airport for the return flight to the USA.

Your travel route is not a transit, so you need to apply for a visa beforehand.

Those of us who mileage run applied for the 10 year multiple entry visa. If you have a US Passport you should do the same. Otherwise try to find something that you go in via Japan and out direct to the US. Or to/from Hong Kong through Shanghai or Beijing.
