About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa if leaving and returning

I am landing in Shanghai airport and transferring immediately to Taiwan (for 1 day only) before returning to Shanghai to visit (for 1 day only). Is a visa exemption valid here? Total time from landing the first time and leaving the second time is only 60 hours but does it matter that I am coming back into China?

You should stretch your second layover in Shanghai for more than 24 hours or as close as possible AND provide a hotel confirmation. many people with layovers for less than 24 hours and without hotel confirmations were refused entry in Shanghai for the past month unless switching terminals/airports. It doesn't sound like you will be leaving the airport for the first layover so no problem there.
