About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

HK to BEIJING, then BEIJING to LONDON (but via HK)

Hi. I have a ticket from Hong Kong to Beijing on Cathay Pacific Airlines, and then Beijing to London on Cathay Pacific also. However, the flight from Beijing to London stops in Hong Kong for 2 hours (because HK is Cathay Pacific's hub). Can I use the 72-hour transit visa in Beijing?

You need a visa or different flights. Hong Kong-Beijing-Hong Kong is not a transit and therefore doesn't qualify for transit without visa.
