About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flight with Chinese airline

Plan to travel Thailand Australia return with short transit stopover at
Shanghai or Guangzhou,pending booking One Australian passport
and a friend with Thai passport. Will a visa be needed for either passport?

If the layover time in China is less than 24 hours, both you can get 24h twov and no need to apply visa.
