About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadian Travelling from Abroad - Japan/Beijing/Hong Kong/Japan

I am Canadian, living in Japan at the moment. If I wish to book a flight where I can spend a couple days in Beijing (to see the city etc) and then move on to Hong Kong to do the same, is it acceptable to book a multi-city flight and still enjoy the (up to) 144 hour layover?

Eg: To fly from Tokyo to Beijing, then stay in Beijing for 4 nights/days (96h, less than the 144), then head to Hong Kong for 2 nights/days, then return to Tokyo

Is this acceptable? Also, how long must I stay in the next location (eg: in Hong Kong) for the 144 hour twov to be acceptable?

Or, do I only have to transit through another country? (eg: Tokyo-Beijing (4 nights/days)-Hong Kong (12 hours stop-over)-Tokyo)

Tokyo-Beijing-Hong Kong-Tokyo is acceptable. It doesn't matter how long you stay in Hong Kong, you don't even need to leave the airport or even the aircraft.
