About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Japan>Beijing>Hong Kong

Hi,

1) I am flying from Japan to Beijing (72 hrs) then to HK (5 days). Point 2 says "you can't do a round trip" (HK>Beijing>HK), but can you do Japan to Beijing then HK? As HK doesn't require one to travel (at least as a tourist) does that rule still apply and I would need to get it, as technically I'm still in mianland? Or am I ok to stay the 72 hrs and then go to HK w/out getting one? (i.e. can I go to Beijing for 72 hrs transit and still go to HK)?

2) You mention above "You should first inform your airline for this free transit request, ...... the free transit permit will be issued." Which airport is this done at (Departing airport or on arrival in Beijing?) (I.e. when should I estimate the clock starts on my 72 hrs, once I land and get a stamp or when I leave for Beijing from Japan?)

Japan-Beijing-HK is ok because HK here is considered as the third region different from mainland PRC. You can use 72 hour free transit in Beijing with confirmed ticket leaving within 72 hours to HK. Just inform your airline before boarding your plane from Japan to Beijing. Technically, the 72 hour starts from you get the stamp at PEK.
