About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I believe I qualify for the 72 hour visa-free transit.

I'm a US citizen, passport expires 5 years from now, embarking on a trip in March/April as follows:
New York / Australia (1 day) / New Zealand (12 days) / Australia (5 hours) / Singapore (6 hour layover) / Shanghai / New York

I will be Arriving Shanghai from Singapore via Singapore Airlines on April 5, 6:35 am.
and Departing Shanghai to New York via United Airlines on April 7, 3:45 pm.

Total of 57 hours

Other than completing the Arrival/Departure Card with Singapore Airlines, is there any other paperwork I need? Since I am in Shanghai for more than 24 hours but less than 72 hours do I need to register with the local police station?

You will need to fill out the yellow card on the plane (or you can get it when you land). You then need to visit the visa free transit desk at the airport and fill out the blue card to request temporary entry permit. You can then stay up to 144 hours.
