On transit to Hainan Island, stopping for 5 hrs at Shanghai airport

My daughter has a UK passport. We are travelling from Amsterdam to Hainan island via Shanghai where we have a 5 hr stop over. We are hoping to get a 30 day free access for Hainan island with a tourist agent, when we arrive in Hainan island. Do we need a visa as we are changing flights at Shanghai?

Yes, you are advised to apply for a visa for mainland China before your trip.

Could we not have a 24 hr exemption in Shanghai as we are on transit to Hainan Island?

I am hoping the travel agent in Hainan island will be able to apply for us a 30 day free entry permit.

Is that feasible ?

You cannot apply the Hainan 30 days visa-free access because of the layover in Shnaghai. You need to apply for a visa.
