About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Ho Chi Minh - Kunming- Shanghai- New York

Hi,

I’m a US citizen. Will fly back to the US on Jan 5 from Ho Chi Minh to Kunming (Jan 4 at 8:55pm in Kunming), then Kunming (8:40 am on Jan 5) to Shanghai (11:40 am on Jan 6) . Then leave Shanghai at 7:30 pm on Jan 6!
My total layover hours in China for these 2 stops (both Kunming and Shanghai) are 23 hours. Can I still use the 24 hour free transit rule to go outside and visit Kunming and Shanghai? Thanks.

You need a visa as your total time spent in China clearly exceeds 24 hours. Two or more stops limit your stay to 24 hours maximum, calculated from arrival at the first port of entry to departure at the last port of exit.
