About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

Do I need a visa to get out of shanghai airport and then come back the next day?

I will be arriving from taipei to shanghai with 18 hour layover and then fly out to Tokyo before heading back to US.

You don't need a visa as you are eligible for the free transit in Shanghai.
