About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Application of the 72 hour visa

Hello,

1. I am a UK national. My outbound flight departs from London, transits in Chengdu for 3 hours, before I arrive in Shanghai.

I then intend to stay in Shanghai for less than 72 hours. I therefore leave for Tokyo within 72 hours of arrival in Shanghai. Does this qualify for the 72 hour twov?

2. On my return I leave from Tokyo, and arrive in Beijing.

I stay in Beijing for 48 hours.

Does the fact I get to Beijing departing from Tokyo mean I still qualify for the 72 hour twov?

3. The outbound and inbound flights are within 2 weeks of one another - is this permitted?

Thank you so much for any advice!!

All the best
Jason

1. You need a visa for LON-CTU-SHA-TYO if you are staying longer than 24 hours in China.
2. It depends on where you are flying after Beijing.
3. It's permitted, but irrelevant in this case because you need a visa anyway (unless you change your outbound flights). You should get a multiple-entry visa.
