Where are dogs kept?

"Q: Can I take my pet?
A: No. But the pet can be consigned as a checked luggage."

Does this mean it is kept in a separate area? Or can my dog stay with me as long as they are in the cage? Also, does this include international train rides? I am trying to avoid storing my dog in the carriage. The stress can be too much for little dogs and I am worried. To avoid this I am thinking of traveling out of hong kong into Vietnam by train and then flying out of Vietnam into Canada. Vietnam allows dogs in the cabin on planes. I am having a hard time finding anyone else online asking about this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

For domestic rail service in China mainland, the dog will be arranged at goods carriages, not together with passenger. Also, as there is no goods carriage on high speed rides, you can only use normal slow rides. Have no idea about international rides. International tickets do not sale online, it is even harder to find a ticket office to confirm this.
