About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

a bit confused

Travel info: US citizen leaving LAX heading to Bali. 12 hour layover in Xiamen. The same trip is heading back to LA with a long stop in Xiamen.
I see that it says I don't need a visa to leave the airport but then it says I need to get a transit permit? Sorry a bit confused. Basically, when I get off my flight can I just walk out of the airport for a few hours or do I need special documentation for when I return?

thank you

You're eligible for the 24h twov both ways and if you wanna leave the airport, you'll get a temporary permit .

I don’t have to apply for it ahead of time? I just let the Airlines now when I check in that day?

You'll get the permit at the Xiamen immigration.
