As long as your travel itinerary qualifies, you can use the free transit. Separate tickets will be fine.

Thanks for reply. My flight from Beijing with Cambodia airlines and check in possible to do only in airport, departure day, as they dont have online check in.... I have only tickets without confirmed seats... It can be any problem of this? As one of requirement for free transit tickets with confirmed seat... ("An onward ticket with confirmed seat are needed").

As I know, the confirmed ticket with a confirmed seat will be required. You cannot travel on standby to apply for the free transit.

She needs a confirmed TICKET and not a confirmed SEAT. The two terms are NOT interchangeable. Confirmed ticket means the airline must guarantee the ticket holder a seat on the plane, which is what Chinese immigration asks; while confirmed seat is the actual seat one sits on the plane which the immigration does not care about. The guide needs to be updated to reflect this since a majority of the people posting questions are confused between the two.
