About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Sydney-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Sydney

If we plan to fly fron Sydney and have three days in Hong Kong, then fly to Shanghai for three days before returning direct to Sydney, do we qualify? My understanding was yes, but a travel agent has just told me that I don’t qualify... I’m confused and can’t phone the Embassy until the morning.

If your return flight Shanghai-Sydney also lands in Hong Kong you need a visa even if you don't leave the airport. Your first landing after shanghai needs to be a different country than the one you arrived form. For example you can take the Qantas or China Eastern non-stop flights or Air Asia through Kuala Lumpur.
