Different flights, need to go out and take luggage and check in again for another flight

Hi, I'm going to USA from Kuala Lumpur and transit through Shanghai. But, I booked a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai and another flight from Shanghai to USA which means I need to take my luggage after I arrive Shanghai, and wait for the next flight. Do I need a transit entry permit since I'm not booking direct flight to USA
