About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stop over on the way to Thailand.

Australian Passenger, flying to Thailand for 2 weeks and have up to 12 hours stop over in Guangzhou. We don't require and therefore don't have a visa for our time in Thailand but are looking to leave the airport and sight see in Guangzhou while we wait for our flights. is this allowed? are we eligible to leave the airport?
