About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Thailand

Do you have to be coming into China from your home country to qualify? I am from U.S. going to Bangkok for several days, then stopping in Shanghai for one day before continuing on to Hong Kong. My flights are through different airlines so not really an extended layover.
