visa needed for asian cruise?

Our Princess cruise at the end of December originates in Singapore and ends in Shanghai. Two of the ports on the cruise are Hong Kong and Taipei. We are staying in Shanghai for two days at the completion of the cruise. We then fly out of Shanghai to the U.S.with a transfer in Hong Kong.Since our stay in Shanghai is less than 144 hours do we need a Chinese entry permit

If the last country or region before entering Shanghai is not UK, you can use the 144h free transit in Shanghai. No visa will be needed then.
