About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

we fly into Shanghai on 9 November from London and leave Shanghai on 12 November on a cruise ship.

The first destination of the ship is Japan and then other countries. We do not return to China at any time. Am I right in thinking we do not need visas for China and can use either the 72 hour transit or 144 hour transit?
