Vietnam to Shanghai - conference

Hello,
I am a Mexican national interested to use the 144-hour free transit to attend a 5-days conference in Shanghai. I should flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to Shanghai, China. I should do an stop in Hong Kong, but I do not know yet if that would be before or after the conference.
Am I eligible to apply for the 144-hour visa-free entry?
Thanks,

It depends on where you are going after Shanghai. HCMC-Shanghai-HK and HCMC-HK-Shanghai-HCMC are both OK, but HCMC-HK-Shanghai-HK-HCMC is not.
