I am traveling from JFK to PVG with 4 days in Shanghai. I then fly PVG to HKG but only for 1 day and then return to NY on a flight which transits PVG again. I will only change plane on the return trip. Does this qualify?

You qualify for the 144h twov in Shanghai in both trips. No visa will be needed. Nice trip.
