You don't need a transit visa if your flights don't stop anywhere else in mainland China.

Hi thanks for your reply I'm very confused now - I thought that the transit visa was instead of getting a normal visa for visiting China. And as I'm only staying in Shanghai for 4 nights and then going to Hong Kong it seemed a lot of money and messing about to get a normal visa. Alison

It is called "144-hour visa free transit" and not a transit visa which is a totally different thing. The former one is what you were asking for.

Thank you that makes sense. So with that trip am I right in thinking that I'm eligible for the 144 visa free transit? Alison
