Applying for a work permit

I am a U.S. citizen. Can I go to the Chinese Embassy in a different country, ex: Thailand, Indonesia or Japan to apply for a work permit? Or do I have to apply for the work permit at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in the U.S.?

As far as I know, you can ask your employer to provide the work permit for you. After you get that, you can try to apply for work Z type visa to enter China. You can make the application at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country, or you can try to do that from other available countries, such as Thailand, Indonesia. But if possible, you are advised to apply from your country.
