About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

22 hour layover in Shanghai

Are US citizens allowed to leave the airport without a visa? Or would we have to get the 72 hour visa? And also can we apply for that visa prior to the trip?

If your itinerary is compliant, you would qualify for 24 hours transit without visa. With a 22 hours transit (especially if you have a hotel booking) you should be granted a 24 hours temporary entry permit, allowing you to leave the airport, although technically this is at the discretion of the immigration official. Obviously you could also apply for a visa before you travel if you wish.
