About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visiting Hong Kong - can I get the transit visa in my way back to the US?

I am planning a trip to Hong Kong in October for a conference. Am I able to make a 1-2 day stop over at Beijing on my return to the US?

It depends on the routing because it must be to a third country. China looks at country immediately before and after Beijing to make the determination. For example Hong Kong > Beijing > Hong Kong is not allowed but Hong Kong > Beijing > USA would be.
