About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Remaining passport left on a child's passport for a stay of less than 24hours in Shanghai

Hi my 5 year old son has Japanese and British dual nationality and passports and will be travelling with me on the 14th from Japan into Shanghai, staying overnight and then onwards to the UK. But, both his passports expire in September... Will this be an issue? Thanks for any replies in advance.

Yes this will cause a problem. There must be at least 3 month left on passport to transit China. Passport will need to be renewed before travel.
