About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I correct in understanding that this would qualify for a 72-hour visa-free transit

My wife and I will be traveling from the U.S. to Beijing, arriving on Nov. 2 at 7:55 PM. The next morning, Nov. 3, we will fly from Beijing at 7:35 AM to Shanghai, arriving at 9:55 a.m. and continue to Hong Kong on an 11:35 AM.

We will board a ship on Nov. 4, but that ship will not depart until Nov. 5 at 6:00 PM.

Am I correct in understanding that we can transit China in this manner, staying in hotels the nights of Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, and a night aboard ship on Nov. 4 without having to secure a visa?

You should be fine for the 24 hour twov. You would not be eligible for longer than 24 hours since you have more than one stop in mainland china. You must depart Shanghai for Hong Kong by 7:55 pm on the 3rd to be eligible. Hong Kong is a separate country from China and US Citizens can be in Hong Kong for 90 days without a visa.
