About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Permanent resident of Canada

Hi,

We are a permanent Resident of Canada but still holding a Philipine passport. We are going for vacation to the Philipines. When we come back to Canada, we have 26 hours layover in Shanghai airport. Are we eligible for the 72hr free transit so we can visit the places near the airport? Thank you.

You’re not eligible. You need a visa or different flights. You would qualify for 24 hours transit without visa.

Hi again,

For the 24hr transit twov, we are not allowed to leave the airport? Even for a short walk outside? Thank you.

Shanghai no longer allows people with layovers for less than 24 hours to clear immigration regardless of nationality. In some cases, bringing a hotel reservation will help. You can have a try.

Again you will need a transit G visa prior to travel so the TWOV is irrelevant in your case. Leaving the airport is allowed if you have a visa, regardless of layover time.
