Is the connection or final destination considered to qualify for 72 h transit visa?

Hello, I am an American citizen traveling from Japan to Beijing (for 72h) and going back to the USA (Los Angeles). I have a connection in Japan (for 2.5 hours, I won't leave the airport) on my way back to the USA. Do I qualify for the 72h free transit as my final destination in Los Angeles?
