Stopping in Beijing in route how long can I stay?

I would like to add Beijing to the list of places I'll be visiting without paying for a regular Visa. I will be coming in from either USA, Japan or Vietnam and going on my way to the same places not sure best route yet. Will that work and how long can I stay 144 hours?

Its not a visa, It's a transit with out visa. You must travel Country A > Beijing > Country C to be eligible to visit Beijing. US passports are eligible for the 144 hour stop. For Beijing arrival you are limited to traveling within Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei regions.
