About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I qualify for Free Transit? I hold a us passport

leaving SFO on 10-18-18 with a layover in Taipei before arriving in Shanghai on 10-19-18. Leaving Shanghai on 10-23-18 to Taipei for 8 days before returning home to SFO. Do I qualify for the 144 hours free transit exception? Thanks!

Sorry, but a visa would be necessary. Taiwan > China > Taiwan is not a transit but a trip to China.
