About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Round trip to Shanghai with transit to Japan in the middle of the trip.

If I have a round trip to Shanghai from the US but I also have a round trip from Shanghai to Japan within the timeline of my round trip to Shanghai can that count as visa free travel as long as I stay in Shanghai less than 144 hours both times.

Here's an example
Chicago to Shanghai (stay 2 days)
Shanghai to Tokyo (stay 1 week)
Tokyo to Shanghai (stay 2 days)
Shanghai to Chicago

Since I would be buying a round trip to Shanghai would they look at that as transit?

The trip in the example will be fine to use the 144 hr free transit in Shanghai in both directions. No visa will be needed. Nice trip.
