Chinese Tourist visa for a friend

Hi,
I am a student in china and a friend of mine would like to visit china on tourist L. One of the visa requirements for L type is an invitation letter. Is it possible for me to provide an invitation letter for him or does he has to be related to me? if i were to provide the invitation letter, what should it contain?
