One time entry or repeated for one year?

I am a male American citizen and became friends with a Chinese person while he was in the USA and I am planning on visiting him this summer (he is allowing me to stay at his place - he has a spare room). On the Tourist L application it asks whether I want entry permit for a one time visit or for repeated visits for the course of one year.

I may go back there again next spring, or I may choose to go to other Chinese cities in the future.

I am confused - if I get the L, won't it be good for 10 years? If I get the L it is just going to be good for one trip to see my friend and I have to keep applying for future entry permits?

In that case I should ask for repeated visits for 1 year?

The issuance of the 10-year visa is not always automatic and if you do not request for it, you may end up with a single entry visa valid for 3 months. You should check "other" and specify that you want a multiple-entry visa for 10 years.
