About:Exit Regulations of China

I have a very big family and I'm going back home to South Africa from a year in China.

I have bought about 20 purses (off Taobao for around 7 yuan each) as gifts for all my female friends and family. I'm worried customs will think I'm taking them back to sell what should I do?

No worry, you can take them and just transported them as checked luggage.

Great thanks! Do you think it will even be fine when I enter South Africa or should I wrap and label them before I put them in my checked luggage?

Well, it depends on the requirements of South Africa custom. Generally speaking, you don't need to lable them. Just put them in your checked luggage.
