About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

We are going to be in Hong Kong on Dec 20 2018 and want to travel to Guangzhou for 3 days.

Do we need to apply for a visa or can we do it either in Sheizen or Guangzhou? Do we get the free transit visa? We are from NZ.

You need a visa prior to arrival unless flying HKG-CAN-a third country, which is usually not cheap (much more than a visa would cost). If you decide not to travel to Guangzhou but to Shenzhen instead, you can get a visa on arrival at a border crossing between HK and Mainland China.
