About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

19hr layover In Shanghai

Just want to double check. I'm a US citizen flying from Bangkok and arriving in Shanghai 00:20. Next flight is same day and leaves 19:30. I should qualify for the 24 hr TWOV correct? I will just need to mention that upon arrival so I can apply for it?

Somewhat off topic but for my previous flight, I arrive in Shanghai 5:20 and leave 10:10 to Chiang Mai. Is it worth leaving the airport for <5 hours? Especially that early in the day?

If you do not leave the airport there's nothing you need to do (the application is made to immigration officers whom you won't encounter if staying in the same terminal). If you do need to leave the airport you'd better have a hotel reservation (unless you are switching terminals or airports). Ultimately it depends on what specific policy they have on that particular day.
