Less than 24 hour visit to Nanjing and Shanghai

Will be traveling to japan from LA and layover at Nanjing. Do we need visa to get out? Arrive 6 pm, flight 8:30 AM. Then coming back from Korea, another 10 hrs layover in Shanghai before flying back to LA, USA. Plan to do city tour during day time 9 Am to 6 pm. Do we need to apply for a less than 24 hour direct transit?

You can enjoy 24 hr TWOV in Nanjing and Shanghai. You are allowed to tour the city of Nanjing during the layover time. But it's hard to say whether you can leave Shanghai airport to sight-see the city.
