About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

My wife and I are currently travelling the world (on our UK passports)

And were planning to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and take advantage of the 72 hour visa free transit, before flying on to Japan. I see that 144 hours is now available. As far as I understand we would qualify for this, can you please confirm that this is the case before we book our flights? From reading this, my understanding is that we do not need to take any action until checking in to board the flight, is this correct? Also when reading up on the 72 hour Visa free transit I recall reading something about having to report to a Police station within 24 hours of arrival, but have not read anything regarding this on the 144 hour visa free transit, can you please advise if anything like this is required?

Many thanks
Andy

That's fine if BJ is your only stop in Mainland China and your destinations immediately before and after BJ are in different countries. The registration rule is that all people must be checked in to a hotel (which will automatically upload your information to the police) within 24 hours of arrival or, if staying in a private residence (may include certain Airbnbs), go with your friend or landlord to the local police station and get a registration certificate within 24 hours in urban areas or 72 hours in rural areas. Failure to comply will result in a ban from using visa-free transit for two years.
