About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

I will be staying in Beijing for 2 days before going to HK and then back to London.

Does the 144 visa free permit work for me?

Yes, it works for you, unless your LHR-Beijing flight stops in Hong Kong or another city in China.
