A single-entry tourist visa is fine. You do not need a visa for your July trip assuming Guangzhou is the only stop in Mainland China and you are in transit to a third country. However, because you will be leaving Guangdong province, the 72-hour TWOV is not an option for your August trip and you must get a tourist visa for that.
